Clipboard Theft
Did you know that by default Internet Explorer allows any website to obtain the current contents of your clipboard? According to Microsoft this isn't a bug, it's a feature. With the release of 7 IE at least it asks for your permission. By default, IE versions prior to 7 don't even ask.
When you copy text in an application it stays in your clipboard until it is replaced or you logout. Imagine you're working in your word processor or quickbooks and you copy data from one place to another. Any website you visit could steal this sensitive information if your browser is vulnerable. Pretty scary, huh?
Example
If your browser is vulnerable your clipboard isn't empty its contents will appear below. Try copying text in a different application such as notepad and see what happens.
Fortunately for you ScriptingMagic.com isn't interested in your clipboard. We just want to inform you of the potential for abuse. Any website operator could be stealing the contents of your clipboard when you visit his site.
The Solution
The best way to guard against websites stealing your clipboard data is to use a browser that doesn't provide this "feature". We recommend Firefox or Opera. Both are solid platforms with great support for web standards.
Firefox is an open source browser that has a lot of community support. It is available for many platforms including Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.
Opera has been a great browser for many years. Up until recently it required you to either purchase it or put up with ads but now you can download it for free!
If you still want to use IE we recommend that you change your security settings.
